Alex Quick, the level designer and texture artist, has stated that “there are a whole bunch of ideas on the drawing board that we can add in after launch, including the ‘Story’ mode from the mod, for instance.” Levels are completely non-linear and open-ended. The gameplay consists of a single game type, solo or multi-player, in which the player fights through waves of zombie-like monsters (or more precisely, specimens from a failed military experiment), with each wave becoming successively more difficult, moving through each area of the level, until it concludes with a battle with a super-specimen, called the Patriarch.
